Farewell Letter
from Steve Poe
Dear Put-in-Bay Community,
I started my tenure as your school Superintendent/Principal in August of 2006, full of enthusiasm for the opportunity to run my own school district. Sixteen years later, it is time for me to retire. Over those years, with the continuous support of every board of education, we made a number of changes and/or improvements:
• Built a New Library and Stage. Renovated Classrooms.
• Instituted an All Day / Every Day Kindergarten Program
• Established a Volleyball and Sailing Program
• Introduced a French Curriculum, Gifted Program, and Numerous Courses for College Credit
• Increased the number of Local Scholarships
• Improved our Outdoor Playground Facility to Include Tennis, Ice Rink, and Lights
• Purchased Two Condos to House Future School Employees
I will take personal credit for two things: One is for establishing and organizing the first ever Great Lakes Islands Basketball Tournament. To witness the sense of pride and enthusiasm this event brings each year gives me a great sense of satisfaction. I hope it continues for many years! The second thing that gives me satisfaction is my hiring of staff. I feel I batted a thousand with all my hires. A school is only as good as its staff, and boy, are we fortunate to have outstanding teachers and staff.
The thing that I have been most happy about during my tenure are the relationships I’ve developed with all my board members, along with the trust and unwavering support they’ve provided me.
Last, but certainly not least, I want to acknowledge our students. When I tell people I have the best job in education in Ohio, the reason is THE STUDENTS. Our students are the most polite, fun loving and giving group of students I have come across in my thirty-seven years in education. I have great memories with our students, including but not limited to: trips to Mackinac and Beaver islands; coaching our girls basketball team to ten straight victories; chaperoning a senior class trip to the Dominican Republic; pep rallies; field trips; proms; quiz bowl and chaperoning a senior class trip to Hawaii. PIB Students Rock!!
As the sun sets on these wonderful years, my wife Dawn and I thank you for your commitment to our school, your support, and your friendships. Thanks for the memories.
Sincerely,
Steven J. Poe
