DYK? The Coins In DeRivera Park’s Fountain
Did you know? A fun fact. In the fall the fountain in DeRivera Park is emptied and the pumps and rings are sent away for cleaning, plus all the coins that were tossed in over the summer are harvested. The problem is the coins are often too dirty for the bank to accept as they are often covered with calcium or algae. When the DeRivera Park staff has the chance they put the coins in a tumbler with hot water and dish soap for between six and ten hours to clean them up. A lid with a rubber seal is placed on top and screwed into place. It is then turned over about 100 times a minute. This knocks free a lot of the filth. Some suggest tumbling in dry sand, but, like polishing rocks, that can smooth and deface the coins. Once cleaned, the coins get spread out to dry and then rolled. Some go in for two or three tumblings. Sometimes foreign coins are found. The proceeds are donated to one of the island organizations.
