Step into the shoes of a prospector from days of old, seeking their fortune! Gemstone Mining at the Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center is a completely unique experience. If you’ve got young ones, it’s an outing they’ll remember for the rest of their lives. I can say that firsthand. Sifting through the rough for these gems is one of only two clear memories I still have from my first trip to Put-in-Bay over two decades ago. It was exhilarating, and the experience remains just as awesome now as it was for me then! Adults will enjoy the experience as well, but we especially recommend this activity for any kids coming up to the island. If you’re looking for a great family experience, you’ve found it!

Gemstone Mining at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center

There is so much going on at Perry’s Cave Family Fun Center, so be sure to budget time for more than just your gemstone experience. The highlight is the namesake, Perry’s Cave. A cave 5 stories below the surface that has incredible historical significance and amazing, unique geological features, there’s a reason that it’s one of Put-in-Bay’s most famous sites. Wear comfortable walking shoes, rubber-soled if possible, to enjoy the cave in comfort.

Mining for the gemstones isn’t the only geological treat on offer. Head back up to the Shop at the Top once you’ve finished up your sifting, and buy an uncut geode. You can then watch as a highly trained member of the Perry’s Cave staff cuts the geode open with a diamond-bladed saw, revealing the natural majesty contained within. It’s a souvenir that you will always love to look at, and it will last a lifetime!
