School News By Steve Poe, Superintendent
“Your greatness is not what you have, it’s what you give.” This is a quote I recently heard and is appropriate for this time of year. For some people, giving may consist of material things, however, the most valued gift one can give is ‘their time.’ If you have not done so already, give a call to someone who may be alone or to someone who needs an encouraging word.
On December 3rd and 4th, we were prepared to host the “Great Lakes Islands Basketball Tournament.” Teams from Mackinac Island, Washington Island, Beaver Island, and Put-in-Bay were scheduled to play a round-robin style tournament which you can get more details here. Unfortunately, Mackinac and Washington had to cancel the day before the start of the tournament due to COVID cases on their respective teams. Beaver Island and Put-in-Bay made the best of the situation and adjusted the schedule. The Beaver Island boys’ team defeated Put-in-Bay in two games, while our Put-in-Bay girls’ team was victorious in their two contests. Beaver Island brought a number of fans, and fun was had by all.
We want to thank all the parents and businesses who donated gift bags, concession food, transportation, and tours.
January is “School Board Recognition Month.” We would like to express our gratitude for the work our Board of Education members do. Each member brings a unique perspective and a different ‘skill set’ that benefits the group as a whole. While keeping our children’s best interests in mind, the board’s decisions have improved and expanded opportunities and programs for our students. Please express your gratitude to board members: John Domer, Karen Goaziou, Mike Byrnes, Bill Market, and Dino Uszak. We welcome two new board members starting this month, Suzanne Kostura and David Hill.
We are hoping ‘Mother Nature’ will cooperate this winter so we can open our ice rink. Children in pre-kindergarten through grade six need to be supervised at all times. Be safe and have fun!
