The Stone Lab has been a freshwater field station since 1895. Then, thirty years later The Ohio State University took ownership of the research facility and the rest is history. Ohio State’s Stone Laboratory offers a variety of science, education, and intense research. The most pressing issues facing the Great Lakes are researched and studied by professional researchers all across the Midwest at this one field station.

The Stone Lab is located on Gibraltar Island, where guests can also explore the Aquatic Visitor Center and the South Bass Island Lighthouse. Here you will receive an in-depth look at Lake Erie’s science and history with a Put-in-Bay landmark tour.

Explore a variety of hands-on science activities, view live Lake Erie fish species, study current research, and check out original equipment from the days when the location was used as the main fish hatchery of the South Bass Islands.

Explore Perry’s Lookout, the beautiful exterior of Cooke Castle, and learn about the Stone Lab research.

South Bass Island Lighthouse Tour
Find out how the island communicated with the outside world years ago and explore some of the pressing issues facing Lake Erie’s ecosystem. Then, climb to the top of the lighthouse tower to see the scenic views on top of Put-in-Bay.
