Diary of an Island Foodie
by Elise
My name is Elise and I’m a foodie. Don’t smoke, don’t drink. I spend my time and money going out to dinner on Put-in-Bay with friends, maybe two or three times a week, plus some take away. I’d like to tell you about my weekly meals. And my favorite places.
Topsy Turvey, year round. I have two go-to sandwiches. The breakfast burrito will fill you up way past dinner time or eat half for breakfast than half for supper. My other go-to sandwich is their chicken, bacon wrap with lettuce and ranch dressing. I think I’m getting hungry again just writing about it.
Another favorite restaurant is Mossbacks, and their meal, Mossbacks island salad. I can’t pass up a salad with mandarin oranges in it. If they’re not too busy they’ll even toss it for me. And of course I have to have it topped with a grilled chicken breast. Their perch and perogis are fabulous and their homemade cole slaw delicious.
If you head on down Catawba Ave., we’ll get to The Reel Bar. My new favorite is their southwest salad, black beans, grilled corn, red onion, cheddar cheese and tortilla strips, then drizzled with BBQ sauce and ranch dressing. I was genuinely surprised with that combination. They also tossed it for me. The lobster roll, lobster and fish combo, I’d like to take a bite right on.
Well, another week, another restaurant. Let’s head out of town to The Goat Soup and Whiskey. I can only say perch taco, perch taco, perch taco. Do you think I love their perch taco? Yes!!
Back in town I’m heading to The BoatHouse. My absolute favorite is shrimp and grits. I guarantee you’ll never have grits so creamy and flavorful. Another favorite is the sunburst salad with crisp romaine loaded with mandarin orange, dried cranberries, red onions, sunflower seeds, crispy rice noodles with poppyseed dressing. Boy, oh, boy!
If you ever just want to get a great sub sandwich to take home or have a bite watching a sunset, stop in at SUBWAY. My best new sub is the chicken bacon melt. You really can’t go wrong with any subs at Subway, located inside the lobby of Commodore Resort.
Another week, another restaurant, let’s talk Brewery. I can tell you for a fact that the Brewery pizza has some good slices and I’ve also enjoyed their philly cheese steak sandwich and the black & blue salad topped with blue cheese, cucumber slices, hold the tomatoes please, and a beautiful cooked steak. Absolutely delicious.
It’s Saturday night and I stopped by the Put-in-Bay Yacht Club for a bite. They have a new chef this year, Ken. Like most restaurants on Put-in-Bay, they have exceptional chefs and Ken is one of them. Tonight I had fettuccine alfredo primavera. Oh my, it was fabulous.
Heading back to Catawba Ave. to Hooligan’s Irish Pub. I usually have their deep-fried cauliflower. My Mom and I were the only ones in the family that really liked cauliflower, So when at Hooligans I can’t pass it up. This trip I wanted to try their corn beef with Swiss, grilled. Yummy. My friend had the reuben. And you can’t go wrong with Hooley sauce on anything.
On a Wednesday before I headed to BINGO I grabbed a bite at Lester’s. I love their tacos. They have a lot of different choices, too.
Here we go again On Catawba Ave. We’re heading across the street to Tipper’s. Tonight I had their cheeseburger and it was pretty tasty. My friend had their southwest salad. She enjoyed it with chicken.
Last night I dined out with friends at the Boardwalk Upper Deck. Everyone enjoyed their meals. A few of us had lobster rolls. Delicious!!! You can get three different rolls to choose from. We chose “New England” and “Upper Deck.”
