Senior Center News by Chris Joyce
Hello April! So many changes coming this month … the grass is greening up; the birds are singing their sweet songs, and we are welcoming some of our “senior snowbirds” back home. As always, we truly appreciate our loyal patronage and wish to thank all of those who regularly attend our activities and special events.
We will have our last off season “Soup & Show” evening on Tuesday, April 8th at 5:30 p.m., and our last Senior Social at Topsy’s on Tuesday, April 29th at 5 p.m. For additional information please check out the calendars posted at the Senior Center, Island Hardware Store & Market, Island General Store, Post Office, Twp. Office. The Put-in-Bay Senior Center is always looking for more people to participate in our activities. The regularly scheduled weekly activities continue with Strength Training, Coffee Socials, Mah Jongg, Bridge and Senior Lunch at Topsy’s.
Our Senior Lunches are held every Monday at Topsy’s at 12 p.m. Please make your reservation by 12 p.m. on the prior Friday by signing up at the Senior Center or calling the center at (419) 285-5501. A very special “Thank-You” goes out to David Hill and the staff at Topsy’s for keeping the weekly Senior Lunches running smoothly and also for making our monthly “off season” Senior Socials so much fun!
The EMS continues to take Blood Pressures every Monday at 10 a.m. during the Coffee Social. Feel free to get yours checked! If you would like to take advantage of the Senior 60+ Clinic, which is a free supplemental program to your regular physician’s care, please call (419) 734-6800 to make your appointment. This free program is provided by the Ottawa County Health Department for those 60 and over. It is held at the Senior Center every third Tuesday of the month, this makes travel easier and saves you time and money. The date for April is Tuesday, the 15th. The clinic provides basic services to people aged 60 and over such as blood pressure screening, blood tests for anemia, blood sugar and cholesterol screening, weight and diet information, and health and medication counseling/education at no charge. Through a comprehensive assessment, a nurse will answer any questions and provide education or referrals to private physicians if needed.
The spirit of volunteering never runs low here at the Senior Center. Thank you to all the seniors who go the extra mile to bring goodies to events, coffee hour, and stay to clean up after activities. Your help is greatly appreciated and I love spending time with such great company.
We are happy to have Spring officially here and in full bloom! With that in mind, the PIB Senior Center wishes everyone an energetic and ambitious April as we gear up for the season.
