Put-in-Bay Airport

During the winter months when the lake is frozen, people hoping to come to the island take to the skies. The Put-in-Bay Airport is how mail and freight get to the island when the boats aren’t running as noted by MX Solutions. There’s also a ton going on here during the summer.

Put-in-Bay Biplane Rides and Put-in-Bay Helicopter Rides are based here all season long and our annual Bash on the Bay is held here at the airport every summer! 

Bash on the Bay is our annual summer concert bringing many people to the island from all over. Previous Bash on the Bay artists included Rascal Flatts, Toby Keith, Kid Rock, and Blake Shelton. 2022’s Bash on the Bay performers will be Brad Paisley on August 24th with Jake Owen, and Zac Brown Band on August 25th with Chris Johnson! This will be a Bash on the Bay you won’t want to miss! 

Also if you’re flying into Put-in-Bay island, you’ll be landing here at the airport. Once you land, you’ll most likely need a ride to your next destination, for that call the Island Club Taxi. Island Club Taxi is the best taxi service Put-in-Bay has to offer. They’ll get you anywhere on the island for $3 per person. They are available 24 hours a day, and their staff of fun, knowledgeable drivers can direct you towards the best bars and restaurants if you need a tip!

If you’ve never been to Put-in-Bay in the off-season, you can’t even imagine how important the airport is to the island. It is absolutely critical for the residents in the winter when the ferries stop running. It becomes the only way to get goods and people to and from Put-in-Bay Island.

You’re likely to pass by the airport at some point during your stay on the island, even if your plans don’t bring you here. But maybe you’ll get to see a takeoff or landing as a great bonus to your stay!

Exploring the Island 

There are many ways to start exploring the great Put-in-Bay attractions here on South Bass Island. You can take the tour train that starts their expedition at the Miller Ferry drop-off. The tour train will take you to all of the most important spots on the island including Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial so you can learn about the War of 1812 and the Battle of Lake Erie. You’ll also be able to see downtown Put-in-Bay, some Put-in-Bay wineries and grape fields, South Bass Island State Park, The Chocolate Museum, Derivera Park and so much more! 

Another option is to explore the Island on your own terms in your own Put-in-Bay golf cart rental. Check out our antique car museum, the Put-in-Bay airport, or our great Put-in-Bay restaurants. Head over to Perry’s Cave to go gemstone mining, play some miniature golf, or challenge yourself to get through the maze at Fort Amaze’n. We also recommend going to Perry’s Victory & International Peace Memorial to go up on the observation deck for some spectacular views. Then head over to the Lake Erie Islands Historical Society and visitor center to learn some amazing things about the monument and island history. 

The nightlife is not the only fun to be had on South Bass Island. Whether you arrive on the island via Put-in-Bay ferry, like the Miller Ferry or Jet Express, Put-in-Bay airport, or even Jet Ski you’ll be sure to have a fantastic time while you’re here. During your next getaway take a Put-in-Bay taxi or Put-in-Bay golf cart rental to the South Bass Island Lighthouse, The Lake Erie Islands Historical Society, The Boardwalk, or the lakeside South Bass Island State Park. One must-see on the island is Perry’s Victory and International Peace Memorial by downtown Put-in-Bay. This monument is one of the most important sights to see on the island! Right near Derivera Park, the monument is named after Oliver Hazard Perry during the war of 1812 and the Battle of Lake Erie. At the monument they also have an observation deck that you can go out on and see everything surrounding PIB, like Gibraltar Island. They often also have live reenactments right in the grass outside of the monument. One of the best Put-in-Bay family-friendly activities on the island is Perry’s Cave and Family Fun Center. Choose from a variety of kid-friendly activities at the Family Fun Center like mini-golf, gem mining, the Butterfly House, a rock climbing wall and more! Boaters usually come down to fish for some fresh Lake Erie Walleye. Stay for one of our Put-in-Bay events like Pyrate weekend or Jeep Fest.
