The Cantankerus of Erie Islands Petroleum
By Amanda Downey
Did you know that Cantankerus commences its seasonal fuel deliveries to the islands this time of year?
Prior to its conversion into a fuel vessel, Cantankerus was built during the Korean War for the purpose of holding equipment, and to transport troops to beaches. Initially, Cantankerus was a LCM 6 Military Landing Craft before it was converted to carrying fuel.
Presently, under the leadership of local Captain Larry Kowalski and captain in training Tony Kowalski, Cantankerus continues to operate effectively its thirty-fourth season. As they have readied this vessel for its forthcoming fuel trips for the 2025 season.
Interestingly, Larry Kowalski is the fifth captain to command this remarkable vessel on the Great Lake of Erie. The vessel’s previous captains include: Marv Booker, Pat Chrysler, Ken Turvey, Gary Kowalski, Larry Kowalski and the incoming captain Tony Kowalski.
Notably, this former military vessel currently carries twenty short tons of fuel. The crew works diligently throughout the season, providing essential services to the surrounding islands and the Miller ferries. It takes a lot of hard work and dedication, plus a lot of time invested by our past and present captains to deliver a vital necessity to our islands. Thank you for your unwavering commitment to fulfilling these critical deliveries.
