One of the questions we get asked most frequently is, “Why is it called Put-in-Bay?” Well, there’s plenty of different stories you may hear, but one is the most widely accepted. The island was known as a sanctuary for ships in Lake Erie during storms. Sailors of old would “put into the bay” to get out of hazardous sailing weather.
